Dealing With Distractions

Have you ever sat down to finish up some work just to realize 45 minutes later that you’ve been aimlessly scrolling through twitter? Or been smack-dab in the middle of a project, just for your friends to tag you in an IG post that sends you down an endless tunnel of double tapping? I sure have. But over the last few months, especially since I’ve started writing, I have learned a few valuable tricks that help me avoid the temptation of distractions.

Your iPhone’s Do Not Disturb Function is a Game Changer

I am a huge do not disturb boy. It’s probably the most used function on my phone. I even have it set to auto DND from 9:30 PM to 6:30 AM every single day. I use it all throughout the day though and especially on the weekends. If I’m out to dinner with my girlfriend, phone goes to DND. Just sat down to finish a chapter of my book at 1 PM on football Sunday… phone set to DND. To me, this function is the main reason I no longer get distracted by nonsense every 15 minutes. I could not picture life without it haha! But I strongly urge you to try this feature out next time you’re struggling to stay focused.

Have Background Noise That COMPLETELY Disinterest You

This might not work for everyone, and many people may disagree, but having something that you aren’t even 0.0001% interested running in the background while you work in could help you focus. I know this works for me, but it literally has to be something I am 100% out on. For instance, a Brewers vs. Marlins game. Or maybe a reality TV show that my girlfriend likes yet I despise. Having that “white noise” in the background really can help, especially if you are someone who hates complete silence. Not to mention, if everything is completely quiet and then you hear a puppy bark outside, you’re more than likely going to get up and go see the puppy. But if you have some background noise going on, you may not even hear that disgustingly cute puppy yapping. So next time you need to get s*** done, throw on a random Spotify Jazz playlist or some sporting even that you don’t even understand the rules to and see where that gets you.

Plan Ahead: Snacks, Fluids, and Chargers Can Make (or Break) Your Focus

This right here may be the most crucial piece of information I will give you to avoid distractions. Plan, Plan, Plan! I cannot tell you how many times I was one hundred percent in the zone, stood up to go grab a drink from the fridge, and ended up distracted by a roommate for thirty minutes in the kitchen. Then that leads to, “What’s another five minutes.” And, of course, that starts a two hour long binge of a Netflix show and you never get back to what you were doing. So before I typically get started, I will make sure I have my Yeti filled with whatever drink I’m feeling for the day, some sort of small snack if I know I’m hungry and probably wont be eating for a while, and my phone set to DND (and usually out of arms reach). Give it a try next time and I’d all but guarantee you’ll be successful at whatever you’re attempting to do.

Sometimes, You Just Need to Give In to the Distraction

Now this does NOT mean you can go distract yourself for two hours! But it does mean that every now and again your brain actually does need a small refresher. Give it five, maybe ten minutes of rest to refuel. Open up that protein bar you have sitting next to you, set a timer, and go browse the gram. Don’t put on any TV though, that’s just asking for trouble. Wouldn’t want to watch an episode that ends in a cliffhanger and draws you in for another 45 minutes, would you!? For me, I like something not related to electronics for the sole purpose of avoiding more blue light. Distractions can be dangerous, but if taken in moderation like anything else, they can be extremely beneficial to the brain.
